Shai Bhula, Head of Application Engineering at ezyVet
A university job in the ASB call centre that evolved into technical support, product ownership and beyond, Shai Bhula, Head of Application Engineering at ezyVet is a great example of not needing a technical background to work in tech.
Having progressed through the ranks at both ASB and TradeMe, Shai now one of the engineering leaders at ezyVet and has found a place he loves turning up to every Monday. Shai has some great advice for people considering tech as a career path as well as those that might want to grow their career at a fast paced and rapidly growing New Zealand tech company. Thanks for sharing your story, Shai.
Firstly, how would you explain to a five year old what it is you do?
My team and I help vets look after animals.
“Every day is never the same as the last day - it is fast pace, high energy, and very exciting!”
And for the adults, what does your typical day-to-day look like for you?
We build innovative features that solve customer problems and continue to enhance our product with daily optimisation. Every day is never the same as the last day - it is fast pace, high energy, and very exciting!
What is the most challenging part of your current role?
Being comfortable that there are so many good problems to solve but knowing you can not solve them all at once - it is knowing what lever to pull when while knowing which one turns the right dial with the right outcome.
Was working in tech something you dreamed about doing as a kid, if not what was?
Ever since I was a kid - I have always been interested in computers & technology. I was always fascinated at learning how to modify hardware or software to change it from the default. Fast forward 30 years - the tech space has continued to accelerate rapidly and it's such an awesome time to be working in tech! Living the dream!
“ ..I found my zone working on high customer impact projects across various segments in the online space.”
Tell us a little bit more about your career journey and ultimately about how you ended up working at ezyVet?
While studying at AUT I was working at ASB in the call centre and then had an opportunity to jump into a technical support role. From there I branched out to Product Ownership within the online space where I found my zone working on high customer impact projects across various segments in the online space.
Fast forward, I then found an awesome opportunity to work at Trade Me where I lead a team of Product Owners. It was a great experience getting to work for the largest ecommerce platform in New Zealand.
In my journey at Trade Me, I was promoted into the Head of Delivery where I was in charge of looking after a large team of Software Engineers, Product Owners, QA Engineers and People Leaders. After just over 4 years at Trade Me, I was drawn to an exciting opportunity to head up the Application Engineering teams at ezyVet which is where I am currently.
What do you love about your role at ezyVet?
I love the rapid growth opportunity both internally as a scaling organisation and also externally regarding customer segmentation. We are solving a number of customer problems using ezyVet's software and growing in demand which is very exciting!
Lastly one thing I really enjoy is joining a team of like-minded people who were equally excited by this amazing journey ahead of us and having to have a say as to how we strategically move forward.
“You don’t have to have all the flash qualifications to jump into tech - start somewhere, have a growth mindset and you will flourish..
What would you say to someone considering a career path in tech?
It has never been a better time to begin your career into tech. Its fast pace, it's rapidly changing, it has become heavily embedded in our ecosystem and has become part of our everyday life. You don’t have to have all the flash qualifications to jump into tech - start somewhere, have a growth mindset and you will flourish in opportunities that grow around you.
Lastly, ezyVet continues to evolve. Who are you wanting to hear from now and into the future, in terms of experience, attitude and character?
At ezyVet we have an amazing opportunity ahead of us that will grow you in your career. We are solving customer problems and are making big global impacts in the veterinary space. We operate with a start-up style culture and are strategically putting in the right structure as we scale in growth rapidly.
This is your chance to be part of something very unique and exciting! Reach out to our amazing People & Culture team if you want to register your interests with us and we will be in touch!
