Retail Crime Intelligence Platform

Auror works to keep our communities safe. We’re doing that by transforming the way retailers report crime, the way police engage with retail crime; and together how they prevent it.

Our platform, used by the largest retailers in the world, enables frontline staff to easily report crime, and identify and link previous offences. We’ve digitised a relationship between police and community, driving collaboration to help solve crime.

Matchstiq's take on Auror

Helping connect communities to stop crime, for good.

The market opportunity ahead for Auror

We’ve created a retail crime intelligence platform designed to prevent retail crime, a $150b problem globally, through digitising the relationship between police and the community. We’re reducing losses, keeping staff and customers safe, and we’re working with the best people to ensure our product continues to deliver for our customers globally.

We’ve acquired 90% of the NZ market, 40% of the AU market, and proudly call the largest retailer in the world, Walmart, one of our customers. We are now expanding into Canada and the UK, focusing on direct to enterprise acquisition methods.

In terms of the horizon, we are focused on continued expansion and ongoing upselling into current markets and bringing on more retail partners across ANZ and North America. We will also be launching in the UK. We are also focused on building foundational work around Responsible AI and this will also shape the future of retail crime and Auror.

Why Auror is a great place to work

At Auror, our aspiration is to be the best place to work. Where everyone gets to do work they love, playing to their strengths every day, and doing so alongside a talented, diverse team who really care for, and respect one another.
We have a culture of seeking the perspectives of others to help us both solve problems and make the best impact. We’re working hard on building a culture of sharing our unique perspectives that can not only benefit our team, but also the communities we’re in.

Here are some examples of how we do this:

Guiding Principles

Every great company has a set of core values and beliefs that align and inspire people. At Auror, our Guiding Principles are a huge part of how we work with one another and our customers - and they’re used everyday, not just pithy statements that go on the wall.

Clarity & Transparency

A core component of a great culture is a strong, deliberate strategy that everyone understands. We have a ‘default open’ approach to communication.

We believe that when individuals take responsibility for sharing context we are setting our teammates up for success and we have a stronger ability to better support our customers.

This also reduces the risk of silos and politics. Our team knows the financial position of Auror which enables better decision making on how we invest and grow. Transparency is a driver of inclusion which has positive benefits on our Diversity.

DEI

Is a priority at Auror. Being representative of the communities our product impacts is critical for our success. With a score of 4.3 out of 5 in our recent DEI Survey it is clear that we are on the right track and our demographics are further evidence of this.

We are now 54% Women & Gender-diverse and 41% of our team are non-white. We also hold Listening Circles for under-represented groups which will enable us to further understand the experiences of those who are under-represented at Auror.

Wellbeing

We demonstrate genuine care and commitment for the physical and mental well-being of our team - enabling them to be at their best and do their best work. Our approach is proactive and preventative. In 2021 we launched our Digital EAP and moved to 10 Wellness Days.

In 2022 we added 5 additional days of Covid Leave if required, and launched Shorter Work Weeks, starting the weekend early on a Friday but at 100% pay.

Career Development

We want everyone at Auror to know what their career could look like with us. We run Best Self Reviews every 6 months which highlights the impact someone wants to make and has a focus on Strengths. We have implemented CliftonStrengths so everyone knows their Top 5 strengths and how to utilise these in their roles.

We spend 50% of our Learning and Development Investment on group learning, and in the last 12 months have run workshops on Ally Skills and Mastering Feedback, with Dr Jeff Smith a renowned psychologist, inventor and writer from the US. The content from these workshops are now included in our onboarding process so every new Auror can gain these skills.

Data Engineer

Description

At Auror, we’re empowering the retail industry to reduce theft and Organized Retail Crime, a $100 billion problem globally. It’s high volume crime that’s increasingly organized in nature and is putting people, retailers, and communities at risk every day.

Founded in New Zealand, we’re working with some of the best and largest retailers in the world across Australasia, North America, and the UK.

Auror connects people with intelligence to reduce crime. As a company, we’ve built a high-performing, positive culture with a focus on providing an inclusive environment for a diverse team. If you’re excited about reducing crime and building safer communities, for everyone, then we want you on our team.

About Auror Engineering

Collaboration is at the heart of the Engineering team at Auror. We believe that we can only build the very best software through working with each other, seeking different perspectives to solve problems. We have just started on our journey to unlock the value in the data we collect, helping to connect the dots between incidents and work towards preventing crime in real time. Every day we have tens of thousands of incidents entered into Auror from retailers around the world, including plain text reports, images and CCTV, which need to be matched, aggregated and reported back to our customers and law enforcement.

About The Role

We are looking for an innovative Intermediate or Senior Data Engineer who is eager to work in the Azure cloud ecosystem and join us in the Engineering team. We have started to build a new data warehouse and our current data platform is built around Azure SQL, DBT, and Snowflake, as well as other common tools such as FiveTran and Azure Data Factory. You will have the opportunity to shape the roadmap and help choose the best tools to make data available and easy-to-use. We’d expect initially your time would be balanced between data modeling and ingestion, before moving onto more operational and long term efforts as our platform grows and matures.

What you will work on:

  • Work collaboratively with our customer team to help generate data models that are easy to understand, fast to query, and appropriately aggregated.
  • Support the wider business by helping to ingest data feeds into our warehouse and make them available in the appropriate tooling.
  • Take ownership of our data pipeline efforts, ensuring our data is available for analysis in near real-time. Manage costs associated with pipelines and data transformations in our warehouse.
  • Managing our platform using infrastructure-as-code, using DBT or other similar technologies.
  • Manage the testing and validation of warehouse data structures.
  • Operationally manage our data pipelines and warehouse, including monitoring and triaging failures.
  • Help to develop the roadmap for our data pipelines and new data warehouse.
  • Help define and support data governance & privacy approaches to data in our warehouse.
  • Share knowledge of our data systems within Engineering, collaborating and communicating with software engineers, testers and product managers.

The role reports to Kat Hempstalk, Director - Data and AI

I currently sit within engineering and look after our new data warehouse and artificial intelligence systems. I have previously held leadership roles at well known NZ companies such as Trade Me, Xero and Orion Health, and have helped build cutting edge machine learning systems in many different domains. I enjoy working with people who are curious, have a strong desire to learn, like using modern technologies and methodologies, and are keen to use data in interesting (and safe) ways. I’m based in Tauranga with my trouble-maker miniature schnauzer, Rufus. You can find my LinkedIn here.

Requirements

  • Experience in a role that involved the development of a data warehouse and the implementation and management of modern data pipelines.
  • Prior experience working with cloud based infrastructure such as Azure/Aws
  • An understanding of different data modeling techniques and trends in modern data warehousing
  • Ability to write SQL and Python or at least one other general purpose programming language.
  • A track record of adherence to modern data governance and security standards

We are looking for people who demonstrate a strong alignment to our Guiding Principles (you can find these on our Careers page).

Benefits

  • Employee share scheme: You’ll own part of a company making a real difference!
  • Flexibility: We are hard-working and outcome focused, but recognize there is more to life than work. We promote a healthy work/life blend.
  • Shorter Work Weeks: Everyone gets Friday afternoons off, so you can start your weekend early, and do more of whatever it is that makes you happy.

I changed careers into software development back in 2008 and started getting paid to do my hobby. Although I continued with software development for over a decade I started getting more involved in cloud architecture from the early days of Azure. The Cloud is a huge enabler, in particular to make the lives of developers better; that naturally led me down the route of Cloud architecture, DevOps and other related disciplines. I joined Auror in 2021 moving from the UK to join the team here in Auckland. I love coming up with creative solutions to problems we're facing, empowering the team and sharing knowledge by speaking at events both internally and conferences/meetups. Outside of work I enjoy being outdoors and taking photos and have a passion for cars and awesome tech in general.

Senior Software Engineer (Christchurch)

At Auror, we’re empowering the retail industry to tackle theft and Organized Retail Crime, a $100 Billion problem globally. It’s high volume crime that’s increasingly organized in nature and is putting people, retailers, and communities at risk every day.

Founded in New Zealand, we’re working with some of the best and largest retailers in the world across Australasia, North America, and the UK.

Auror is connecting people and intelligence to reduce crime. We’re harnessing data for good.

In partnership with our leading retail partners, we need people with the passion, determination, and innovation required to overcome one of the world's largest problems. If you’re looking to make a difference with and for the people dedicated to stopping crime, for good, then we want you on our team.

THE ROLE
We’re looking for folks from diverse backgrounds to join our Product Squad. This squad is responsible for shipping great product from design and UX through to delivery, playing a critical role in shaping our product and enabling our business to scale globally.

You will be responsible for:

  • Building, managing, and maintaining the operational capability, design and architecture of the Auror platform
  • Introducing new ways of doing things, new tools or different solutions to challenges in a lean but scalable and effective way
  • Ensuring that the platform is well architected, fast and functional for users with testability and security as core focuses

You’re pragmatic in your approach and you find looking at the big picture easy. You’re commercial too, so you understand the business needs and how that applies to the work you’re doing and you make decisions and prioritise accordingly. You optimise for team throughput, not personal latency.

You are across all the latest and greatest technology, but this doesn’t mean you chase the new and shiny and just have to implement it. You know what’s going on in the market and you have a knack for making the right build vs buy decisions. Degrees and formal qualifications are nice to have, but relevant experience is more important.

Our current tech stack consists of the following tools and frameworks: ASP.NET Core, Javascript, MSSQL, EF Code First, React SPAs (Typescript, MobX, create-react-app, CSS modules, webpack, SCSS), Flutter, Azure, Azure Search, ARM Templates, Azure Functions. If you haven’t used these exact frameworks but have experience in similar tech, please apply.

Here's some information about Rob Fonseca-Ensor, our VP Engineering

I got my start in software consulting, but the second half of my career has all been in product startups and I'll never, ever go back. When your code is at the core of what your company does, it's worthwhile putting in the extra effort to build an exceptional product and I’ve always cared deeply about the people using my code.

I’m very conscious about extending that empathy to the people I work with. I firmly believe that people do their best work when they're not stressed out or micromanaged. I love to empower people with context, authority, then take a step back and see them grow. The best software gets written when people have the time to collaborate, contemplate, research and prototype.

We've got an awesome team that are an absolute pleasure to work with (and incredibly good at their jobs), we're making a HUGE positive difference to our customers and the people in communities they're in, and our company culture is authentically awesome. Outside of work, I've got two teenagers under 7 that are everything. Cooking is my number one hobby, and my kids are master food critics.

Requirements

To ace this role you will have the following skills:

  • A deep understanding of web technologies and how they’ve evolved. You know how to use this knowledge to solve the problems of today but also to prepare us for future challenges
  • Knowing what you do know about technology, you realise just how much you don’t know and that drives you to continue to learn
  • Experience creating reliable and scalable systems and environments using cloud hosting providers
  • An in-depth understanding of software design patterns and experience implementing various patterns to solve complex problems
  • A collaborative working style and an appreciation for working in an agile environment. You’ll be able to work with developers of all skill levels, and to coach and mentor your teammates.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to discuss technical problems and solutions with both technical and non-technical people.
  • Ability to think holistically about the impact of your work and your decisions on the whole business, not just the engineering team.

Sometimes we can let confidence get between us and applying for a job we want. But there’s something you should know: no one is perfect and we are proud of the fact that Auror is a place where everyone can learn and grow. So however you identify, and whatever background and experience you bring with you, please apply if this is a role that would make you excited to come into work every day.
