Matchstiq's take on Auror

Auror is on a mission to transform the way retailers report, solve, and prevent crime.

The Market Opportunity Ahead for Auror

Aurors Crime Intelligence Platform is now used by the largest retailers in the world. In NZ, Auror works with nearly every major retail brand across the country and is quickly picking up the largest retailers in other markets, including Australia and North America.

They have developed a first of its kind National Partnership Agreement with NZ Police, and now have hundreds of law enforcement agencies in its other markets using their platform to work with the retail community.

If crime was a country, its economy would be one of the largest in the world, with retailers alone worldwide losing more than $100 billion to shoplifters every year, leaving no shortage of growth opportunities for Auror.

Diversity and Inclusion at Auror

Auror places high importance on being representative of the communities, customers, and partners they support.

This includes ensuring a fair, equitable and inclusive environment where everyone feels empowered to bring their full, authentic selves to work. This is seen through everyday actions and interactions within the company, but Auror also:

  • Provides Ally Skills Training to the whole team;
  • Encourages and supports members of the team who play an active role in mentoring and supporting people from marginalised groups;
  • Run Open Days where they welcome people from diverse and under-represented backgrounds into the office to see how things work, answer any questions and help them take steps towards understanding more about possible career pathways.

"We have a lot more we want to do in this space and we are excited to share more about our journey in building a great company for all people."

Here's some information about Rob Fonseca-Ensor, our VP Engineering

I got my start in software consulting, but the second half of my career has all been in product startups and I'll never, ever go back. When your code is at the core of what your company does, it's worthwhile putting in the extra effort to build an exceptional product and I’ve always cared deeply about the people using my code.

I’m very conscious about extending that empathy to the people I work with. I firmly believe that people do their best work when they're not stressed out or micromanaged. I love to empower people with context, authority, then take a step back and see them grow. The best software gets written when people have the time to collaborate, contemplate, research and prototype.

We've got an awesome team that are an absolute pleasure to work with (and incredibly good at their jobs), we're making a HUGE positive difference to our customers and the people in communities they're in, and our company culture is authentically awesome. Outside of work, I've got two teenagers under 7 that are everything. Cooking is my number one hobby, and my kids are master food critics.

  • Experience working on systems hosted with cloud providers.
  • Exposure to and understanding of software design patterns and experience implementing various patterns to solve real problems.
  • A collaborative working style and an appreciation for working in an agile environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to break a complex piece of work into simple parts, and tackle them methodically.

Sometimes we can let confidence get between us and applying for a job we want. But there’s something you should know: no one is perfect and we are proud of the fact that Auror is a place where everyone can learn and grow. So however you identify, and whatever background and experience you bring with you, please apply if this is a role that would make you excited to come into work every day.

Quality Analyst (Auckland)

At Auror, we’re empowering the retail industry to tackle theft and Organized Retail Crime, a $100 Billion problem globally. It’s high volume crime that’s increasingly organized in nature and is putting people, retailers, and communities at risk every day.

Founded in New Zealand, we’re working with some of the best and largest retailers in the world across Australasia, North America, and the UK.

Auror is connecting people and intelligence to reduce crime. We’re harnessing data for good.

In partnership with our leading retail partners, we need people with the passion, determination, and innovation required to overcome one of the world's largest problems. If you’re looking to make a difference with and for the people dedicated to stopping crime, for good, then we want you on our team.

The Role

At Auror, we believe that everyone across the business is responsible for quality, but as a Quality Analyst you’ll be one of our quality experts. That can mean (but not limited to):

  • Pairing with developers to test features before they are merged.
  • Coaching developers on how to do better exploratory testing or to provide better confidence by creating appropriate tests.
  • Analysing the root cause of problems and understanding how to prevent them, and working with the team to improve our shipping process.

We don’t see QA as someone who just catches bugs and carries out manual testing. In this role, you will be involved from the start to the end of a project: from design and research, to monitoring usage and abnormalities in the production environment. QA is involved in everything we do - to improve quality, to speed up development time, and ultimately to help deliver an amazing product to our users.

Currently, we are a small team of four. We have deliberately kept a low QA:developer ratio while figuring out what the Quality Engineering model should look like at Auror. We are moving away from a traditional agile QA model to a culture where everyone is responsible for ensuring quality and QAs are there to assist. Our QA model has evolved from having to perform manual regression tests for every release, to now releasing multiple times a day automatically.

You will be responsible for:

  • Working within a cross-functional engineering team to improve the product and deliver it in a fast and efficient way.
  • Pairing with developers to identify and discuss the approach needed for tickets to ensure it is of quality and determine how it can be tested.
  • Assessing and mitigating risk and carrying out exploratory testing when needed.
  • Creating test plans for new features and collaborating with the engineering team on how the feature should be tested.
  • Identifying test gaps and working with engineers to automate regression testing based on risk.
  • Helping to define success criteria within requirements and to identify risks and bugs before they happen.
  • Working in partnership with Product Managers and Designers to effectively identify and resolve bugs in designs and requirements.
  • Identifying and implementing initiatives that help deliver a better quality product, reduce the cost/time of testing and impacts of weak testing.
  • Effectively communicating product issues and reporting risks that might impact progress.
  • Contributing to our engineering practice, look for ways of working smarter.

All good things start off small - like my knowledge about QA when I first stepped into a Testing role. Over the years, this little something has grown into a passion. I’ve been inspired by those also passionate about quality and it has driven me to seek new and innovative ways to approach each challenge. There is nothing more rewarding than working with the team to tackle what seems like an unsolvable problem - especially over a cup of bubble tea, a few wicked wings and my baby on my lap fighting to smash the keyboard. I like to surround myself with people who are curious to learn, excited to try out new strategies and tools, and driven to take quality engineering to the next level.

Requirements

We are looking for people who are passionate about quality, love a new challenge, are open to feedback, and put the team first.

We welcome applications from people at all levels, who have the following skills:

  • Detail-oriented: You’re good at thinking through the details of a complex problem.
  • Proactive: You won’t let anyone bury their head in the sand and you’re not afraid to ask questions.
  • Enthusiastic: You love what you do and you like to understand the impact you make.
  • Curious: You want to understand and explore how things work and their effects.
  • Technical Interest: You’re keen to inspect and investigate through the layers of a software platform and get practical with code.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills: You think a good repro is just as important as finding the bug.
  • Relationship management: You’re adept at working with different stakeholders at different levels to get things done.

We’re looking for someone aligned to and excited about our Guiding Principles:

  • Be Deliberate: Focus on delivering value to customers. We think big and start small. We continuously raise the bar.
  • Be a Partner: We’re collaborative and supportive. We partner with each other and our customers to create value. We have collective responsibility and hold each other to high standards.
  • Seek Perspectives. Solve Problems: We invite Strong Opinions Loosely Held for healthy discussion. We listen, understand, and keep an open mind.
  • Master Simplicity: We make the complex simple for each other and our customers. We are deliberate in everything we do. We focus on the problems we’re trying to solve.
  • Add a Touch of Magic: Look for opportunities to create magic moments in the work we produce, no matter how small.

Research shows that candidates from underrepresented backgrounds often only apply for roles if they think they meet all the criteria. We are proud of the fact that Auror is a place where everyone can learn and grow.
