Some of their initiative and progress to date include:

  • Showcasing career pathways in technology, specifically music tech for Maori & Pasifika students.
  • Donating to Passion to Profession as part of our December sale and hosted a Vaka Experience with Passion to Profession, which included 16 students visiting Melodics to see what they do and how they do it.
  • Took part in a Careers Talanoa with Navigators of Success.

They have designed their people & culture practices with inclusion and equity lens that heavily draws on their values. This includes decoding job ads for bias and a strong emphasis on learning and development to recognise and reduce bias across all facets of the business.

Senior Desktop Engineer

“If you make beats… Melodics is like going to the gym for a workout!” - DJ Jazzy Jeff.

Melodics was conceived by Sam Gribben, ex CEO of Serato, in the summer of 2014. Having finished up at Serato after a decade at the helm, Sam was ready for something new. He’d worked with some of the biggest artists in the music world, and with the international companies who built the instruments & controllers they used. Along the way he noticed how important pad & cue point drumming was becoming in the overlapping worlds of DJing & production. Thus, an idea was born.

Our product is shaping how the world learns to play musical instruments. We want to enrich our world with music and make it accessible for everyone. Melodics is entering a new phase. We’ve proven the core concept, and we’re switching gears from start up to scale up. We're currently 35 people and looking to nearly double by 2022. Our three year strategy includes some big goals, and we need you!

We are a user experience driven company that places the customer at the heart of our decisions. Our team is made up of a diverse bunch who come from a range of backgrounds (professional musicians, SaaS experience, higher education experience).

The tech team:

We’re a small but perfectly formed tech team. We believe that a small team of amazing developers can deliver more than a big team of good ones. We care deeply about our customers and strive to deliver results for them. We ship small and often, we’re always incrementally improving what we do. We continuously work to create an environment of selflessness, building on each others ideas by being generative (‘yes’ instead of ‘but’), and balancing high autonomy with lots of collaboration.

If what we do and how we work sounds like a bit of you, then please read on.

Requirements

  • You have commercial experience with modern C++
  • You’re familiar with building and shipping cross-platform desktop and mobile applications
  • You have experience in environments where shipping often is the norm, and you’ve used CI / CD tools.
  • You build with cost, performance, and reliability in mind. You know when to make practical trade-offs and what is important to stick with.
  • You build testable code, employing unit testing frameworks and techniques to reduce errors and facilitate code sharing.
  • You’re proficient with Git source control tools and workflows
  • You’ve used QT/QML on OSX and Windows Desktops, and iOS
  • Some nice to haves are: React.js, React Native, Javascript, Typescript, HTML, CSS

You definitely don’t have to tick all the boxes, we’re looking for someone who can grow with us. If you feel like you tick most of the boxes, then we’re keen to hear from you!

Lastly, as a group we’re pretty obsessed with either: music, education, design-thinking, adaptive learning. It’s a plus if you are enthusiastic about some of these areas too!

Benefits

The position is a permanent, full-time role. based in Auckland, New Zealand. While we have a lot of flexibility when it comes to WFH, we are looking for someone to be based from our office on Karangahape Rd for part of the working week.

Some of the cool things about working at Melodics are:

  • Working in a positive, fast-moving, and motivating environment, solving interesting and meaningful problems around music and education
  • We truly value innovation and growth - ask us about our weekly growth experiments!
  • We’re a friendly and smart team - we listen to each other’s ideas and give everyone a voice to influence and shape the future of Melodics
  • We want you to work in the best way that you can and have a documented flexible working policy
  • We value the wellbeing of our team - we have mental health and physical health First Aid-ers, we've replaced traditional 'sick leave' with uncapped wellness leave from day one of your employment, and a 'winter wellness' bonus payment.
  • An array of musical instruments you can borrow and play! (and office jams)

Chief Operating Officer

We're currently almost 40 people and looking to nearly double by 2022. Our three year strategy includes some big goals, and we need you!

We are a user experience driven company that places the customer at the heart of our decisions. Our team is made up of a diverse bunch who come from a range of backgrounds (professional musicians, SaaS experience, higher education experience).

We strive to create an inclusive environment for our team, customers, and partners.

Role Purpose

The COO will oversee and drive the execution of our strategy. The COO will be responsible for the systems and processes that support our team, and for optimisations and efficiencies within these systems and processes (we know, not a great sentence). You will ensure we maintain alignment between the teams, and that the goals we all set align to each other and to the strategy. The CEO defines the strategy, the COO helps us to constantly get better at executing it.

You will form part of the senior exec team, working closely with the Chief Revenue Officer and leadership team, and be the connective tissue between teams.

The first project for this role is: scale our product development process & methodologies, help our current team to level up their processes. So we’re looking for someone who has experience in product management or development. Ideally you have a lot of experience with product and development processes, and you feel your next step is translating those skills into the wider operations of a business.

The COO will also:

  • Act as a right hand and trusted advisor to the CEO
  • Work with the CEO to on strategic direction and run point on executing to that strategy
  • Play a key role in internal operations and look for ways to optimise all aspects of the company as we scale
  • Support the CEO with board reporting and management
  • Support the CEO with managing investors and shareholders, and with capital raising

  • Drive our non-commercial and ESG goals.
  • Manage Ad-hoc projects.
  • Promote a culture of feedback that helps a high performing team to stretch and grow.
  • Stay on top of market trends, legislation and the competitive landscape
  • Manage the company risk register

Success looks like:

Narrow the team's focus

  • The fewer things we focus on, the better those things will go.

Protect deep work time

  • To produce at a peak level we need to work for extended periods with full concentration on a single task free from distraction.
  • Meetings and interruptions are only called when necessary. They run efficiently, add to your sense of focus, not take away from it.

Sync better to align on priorities and unblock blockers

  • The faster we need to go, the more we should be syncing. We keep these meetings short, focused, and decision-oriented. Frequent and not disruptive

Make sure our tools are fit for purpose

  • As we grow, our tools evolve. Some are getting creaky now. The same applies to systems and processes. We optimise so that we can do more with what we have, we’re not wasting energy running around after things that aren’t important. We can all see what’s going on without having to dig through slack and sheets.

Align the team

  • Everyone knows what the plan is, they know what their part in it is. They can get on and do it, with minimal noise. It’s a lot more fun too, you know what you need to do, and you know it’s important.

Optimise our team structure.

  • We evolve how the teams form, change and interact. We keep as much of that small company goodness as we evolve. Low on hierarchy, big on good comms, no silos.

Take a lead role in project governance.

  • Aligning the high level projects across the company. Bringing together a high level roadmap that combines the different departments. See also - we can all see what’s going on.

Catch all the things

  • That which we all agree are important, but no one has space for.

Regularly check in to make sure we’re working on the right things, in the right order.
