The Matchstiq Top 100

Matchstiq's take on First AML

First AML's mission is to help everyday people access the financial system while limiting criminal exploitation.

The market opportunity ahead for First AML

We've just completed a Series B raise of $30M. We've just launched into the UK as of 1 April, and we're launching into Singapore later this year. We're embedding ourselves into the Aus market as Tranche 2 is looking likely to hit.

Why First AML is a great place to work

A culture of values

First AML’s founders have big dreams and have defined a culture to achieve them. Spurred by disillusionment with ‘corporate’ culture, they set company values to instil resilience and adaptability.

These values, genuine respect, a concerted effort to hire based on diversity and inclusion, and systematised growth and development opportunities have led us to where we are now.

Champions of diversity and inclusion

Diversity and inclusion is a cornerstone of our culture. Our company-wide 58:42% female:male ratio sits at:

  • Development: 43%
  • Product and engineering: 50%
  • Senior management: 42%

Our staff are from 22 countries and we are working on creating an environment that is safe and inclusive for everyone. We track our diversity and our Diversity and Inclusion Alliance is made up of representatives across the company.

As a result of this we have established the Pride Committee. This ensures open feedback, constant improvements, and a supportive and evolving culture so people can bring their true selves to work.

Flexible even before COVID

Our flexible and understanding culture existed even before the pandemic. We offer work-from-anywhere, and actively target and support talent who may not be able to work standard hours. This approach builds respect, trust and loyalty, helping us build a resilient team that can, and does, go the extra mile to help achieve growth goals.

Wellbeing

Happy staff make for happy clients. We understand this and have developed a broad employee well-being program that supports each individual while driving First AML’s success. This includes:

  • Meditation and yoga sessions
  • Internal promotions
  • Sports events
  • Employee Assistance Program, discounts for life and health insurance, pilates and gym memberships and medical appointments
  • Annual $NZ2000 professional development allowance per person
  • Social and team-building activities
  • Gratitude gifts for living our values
  • International pathways providing opportunities to transfer overseas

We give a voice to every employee to challenge us to do better.

Working with us

Values

  • Trusted Guardians of Compliance

We handle all data with respect and we ensure security and privacy measures are best in class to maintain the trust of our users.

  • Innovate and Blaze Our Own Trail

We continuously experiment and innovate, to develop creative solutions that challenge the status quo. We encourage each other to think big, seeking out growth opportunities as individuals and as a company.

  • Ownership and Execution for the Win

We take initiative to solve problems, acting in the best interests of the entire company to drive our collective success. It’s never “that’s not my job”. We do what we say we’re going to do, take pride in our work, and put in the hard yards.

  • Positive Vibes to Pull Each Other Up

We are honest, respectful and authentic with one another. We proudly foster an inclusive environment and welcome different backgrounds or perspectives. We work hard but take time to enjoy the journey, celebrate successes, live balanced lives and look after each other.

  • Create Customer Delight

We work with empathy to give our customers and end users the best possible product and service. We delight customers in every possible way so they become advocates for us. When they win, we also win.

Our Product team.

Our Product Team is led by Leonie Wise - VP of Product.  Leonie is an enthusiastic and engaging leader who  empowers her  team so our product continues to help everyday people access the financial system while limiting criminal exploitation.

We love to collaborate - With a dedicated Product Manager and Designer assigned to an engineering team.  This way of working creates a great team environment where it nurtures our passion of delivering an exceptional product.

Some of the tools we use

We currently use Sketch as our design tool and have started building out a design system and component library using Notion. We use Miro for collaborating and encourage lo-fi (pen & paper) for sharing early ideas. We use Dovetail as our research repository and Roadmunk for our roadmaps.

It would be great if you had experience using these but if not that’s ok by us.  At First AML we foster an environment where everyone can learn and grow; we’d be more than happy to share our wisdom with you and would like to learn from you too!

About the Role

As our UX Design Lead you will:

  • Lead the design direction and strategy of our full platform experience, taking into consideration both the needs of our customers and the direction we’re heading as a business.
  • Be involved in the end-to-end process of designing products. From research and discovery, validation, launching and post-launch improvement. Collaboration is a key part of this process and you’d be bringing both internal and external people along on the journey with you.
  • Bring design leadership to the team, including regular design reviews and feedback, support and coaching, promoting good design processes and facilitating design innovation
  • Lead initiatives to shape and evolve our UX & Design practice
  • Co-own, develop and maintain the design system, style and usability guidelines.
  • Partner closely with the product management team to drive UX design roadmap planning and prioritisation that is in complete alignment with, and with clear support of, the product roadmap.
  • Conduct walkthroughs at various stages of the design journey – from early thinking using hand-drawn sketches through to hi-fidelity designs – all in the spirit of visibility and to gather feedback from others in the team whose perspectives differ from your own.
  • Proactively seek ways to continuously improve efficient, collaborative design and development processes with stakeholders and the VP Product
  • Support the VP product with the recruitment and hiring of new team members

About you.

You may be a good fit if you:

  • Have 5+ years experience as a Senior UX designer / 2+ years experience as a UX design lead, working on a SaaS product
  • Have the experience (or desire) to build and scale a design practice and build the profile of UX within a global company
  • Have a passion for best practices, including Lean UX and Human Centered Design, and have designed complex software products that suit a global market
  • Have proven experience with both in-person and remote user testing and an ability to plan and conduct research, as well as synthesising and sharing results.
  • Love to consider long-term sustainability in all design decisions and maintain an eye for reusability in designs. You have an excellent ability to demonstrate systems thinking.
  • Are comfortable with questioning any prior decisions we’ve made and suggesting approaches for how we might improve both our product and our practice.
  • Enjoy the impact you can have working in small teams and value the collaboration they bring. You believe great products come from great teams.
  • See an opportunity for growth in the things you don't know, and you’re okay with sometimes being a little out of your depth.

Our culture and values make us who we are. We’d love to connect with like-minded people who align with our values and want to make a positive impact on our culture.

Since 2018 we have experienced exponential growth, secured amazing funding and have gone from a handful of staff to 130+ and based on our success across New Zealand and Australia we are excited to be launching in the UK.

About our Tech Stack.

The front end is a React app built with TypeScript and we use Apollo to consume our internal API.  The back end is a GraphQL API built with .NET core, with a Postgres database.

The whole thing is hosted in containers on AWS, managed with terraform, deployed with BuildKite and monitored in DataDog.

It would be great if you had experience in a couple of these technologies but if not that’s ok by us.  At First AML we foster an environment where everyone can learn and grow, so we’d be more than happy to share our wisdom with you and would  like to encourage you to apply!

Our Engineering Role.

Our Engineering Team is led by Alex Henderson - VP of Engineering.  Alex is an amazing people and technical leader with extensive experience in growing engineering teams that support each other so that together they can build an extraordinary product.

At First AML, Engineering work in teams - Hoiho, Tūi, Kārearea and Dottrel. Each team includes 4 developers (2 Front End, 2 Back End and one of which is a Tech Lead) along with a QA.

We work on continuous delivery, where we ship numerous times throughout the day.  We believe that this is the very best way to provide value to our customers.

As a team we love to collaborate - each of our engineering teams partners with a dedicated Product Manager and Designer.  This way of working creates a great team environment where it nurtures our passion of delivering an exceptional product.
